Betty Ann's Letter

AN-26 · Country · Country · 6 August 2026

"Betty-Ann's Letter" is a story about childhood friendship, first love, and the memories that never truly fade.

When Betty-Ann's family moves away, she leaves behind more than an old barn and a dusty country road—she leaves behind the boy who shared every carefree summer with her. All he has left is a handwritten letter, carefully kept through the passing years, reminding him of a promise made when they were too young to understand what goodbye really meant.

This song is about the people who shape our lives long before we realize how important they are, and about the hope that some bonds can survive even the longest silence.

"Betty-Ann's Letter" is the first chapter of a two-song story, continued in "The Stone I Threw Away," where the other side of that childhood goodbye is finally revealed.

Lyrics

Down a dusty road where the tall grass bends There was a boy and a girl, just two best friends Barefoot summers, chasing dragonflies Laughin’ loud under open skies Old Mr. Burke had a barn out back Leanin’ sideways like it might collapse We’d climb those beams, make kingdoms there Two young hearts without a care Time was slow, the world was wide Didn’t know how fast it flies Oh Betty-Ann, where’d you go? Past the fields and the roads we know Do you still laugh like you did back then? Or did the world grow quiet on you, my friend? I still hold that letter in my hand Ink all crooked but I understand You said “no matter where I am” “I’ll always be your friend” Your daddy wore that uniform proud Said they were movin’, cross the ocean now We sat real still on that wooden floor Didn’t know what goodbye was for You wrote me once in a shaky hand Signed your name “Love, Betty-Ann” Said “don’t you worry, don’t you cry” But you never told me why goodbye Mailbox empty, days turned years Dust and silence filled my fears Oh Betty-Ann, where’d you go? Past the fields and the roads we know Do you still laugh like you did back then? Or did the world grow quiet on you, my friend? I still hold that letter in my hand Ink all crooked but I understand You said “no matter where I am” “I’ll always be your friend” I tried to write, but I had no place No address, no familiar trace Just your words and a memory Echoes of what used to be Sometimes I swear I hear your voice On the wind when the leaves rejoice Like you’re still runnin’ through that land Still just you and me again Oh Betty-Ann, are you alright? Did your dreams take you somewhere bright? Do you remember that old barn door? Or me waitin’ there like before? I still hold that letter in my hand Every word just like we planned You said “no matter where I am” “I’ll always be your friend” There’s a space inside I can’t mend Where your laughter used to live, my friend And I still look down that old dirt road… Hopin’ someday you’ll come home
